OUR PHILOSOPHY
The following core values are the least common denominators that One Vote at a Time and all of our candidates support:
UNIVERSAL BACKGROUND CHECKS
We believe in enforcing universal background checks and closing loopholes, such as the so-called “gun show loophole” which allows buyers to purchase from private sellers or unlicensed dealers without undergoing background checks.
ASSAULT WEAPONS & LARGE CAPACITY AMMUNITION MAGAZINES
We believe in renewing the federal assault weapons ban. Until then, we believe that states should implement a ban on assault weapons and large capacity ammunition magazines. We also believe in banning dangerous accessories to modify firearms, like bump stocks.
SAFE CAMPUSES
We believe in a holistic approach to legislation that will keep our students safe. We do not believe in arming school teachers or administrators.
EXTREME RISK PROTECTION ORDERS
We believe in Extreme Risk Protection Orders, also known as “red flag laws.” These laws can empower families and law enforcement officials to prevent tragedies by temporarily restricting access to guns for individuals who pose a threat to themselves or others.
WAITING PERIODS
We believe in implementing waiting periods for firearm purchases. Studies have shown that waiting periods can significantly reduce the rate of suicide by gun.
FUNDING FOR GUN VIOLENCE INTERVENTION PROGRAMS
We believe in preventing violence before it happens, and using evidenced-based, customized solutions that can help decrease violence. These programs have proven to be effective in combatting gun violence in Black and brown communities and for decreasing suicide rates in older white populations. Each community is different, as are their needs to combat ongoing threats. We support funding efforts that identify the needs of a community, listen to the participants, consult with experts, and closely monitor the results, making changes as needed. These programs can make immeasurable contributions to decreasing gun violence across the country.
This is not a comprehensive list of the policy changes we want to see, but rather a starting point for common sense gun safety legislation that we believe can be achieved in the immediate future.
